Leg 1: São Luís – Barreirinhas
Buses, vans and transfers run from São Luís; with a rental car you drive yourself. The valorfinal.com.br route planner gives 255 km and – depending on traffic – a good three to four hours. Many guesthouses and tour operators arrange transfers, often with pick-up at the airport or in the old town.
Mobile coverage is usually fine for navigation; an eSIM is handy because you’re online as soon as you land: Travel eSIM explained – internet without swapping SIM cards. In Brazil we use a Holafly eSIM (code JANPEM4IDSKH for 10% off).
Tips for the drive:
- Leave early so you reach Barreirinhas in daylight.
- Download offline maps – coverage can be weaker on some stretches.
- Bring water and snacks; there are roadside stops.
- With a rental car: keep an eye on fuel stations and avoid driving after dark.
Barreirinhas: the gateway
Barreirinhas is the gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses, with accommodation, restaurants and many tour operators. Most trips into the national park start here – the dunes aren’t reachable on foot from town; tours use off-road vehicles. If you don’t want to continue straight away, spend a night here.
Leg 2: Barreirinhas – Atins
- Speedboat (voadeira/lancha): about 50 minutes on the Rio Preguiças; daily in high season, book your return in time.
- Boat tour with stops: versions with stops (e.g. Vassouras, Mandacaru, Caburé) take considerably longer – lovely if you have time.
- 4x4 pickup: about 2 hours across sand and through rivers – cheaper but bumpy.
Luggage tip: open boats can get spray. Electronics – laptop, camera, Starlink Mini – belong in a waterproof bag or at least a dry sack.
Arriving in Atins
Boats dock at the harbour on the edge of the village; many pousadas pick up their guests. Atins is small, with sandy lanes instead of tarmac – ideal for switching off, but a challenge if you need to work. Wheeled suitcases are a pain on sand; a backpack or duffel is more practical.
Best time to travel
The lagoons between the dunes fill with rain. Many sources name the months after the rainy season as the best time for full lagoons. Because it varies from year to year, check current information from local operators before booking. Outside that window the dunes are still impressive – the lagoons are just smaller or dry.
Internet and power on site
How we got online in Atins: Internet in a dead zone – our setup in Atins (Lençóis Maranhenses). Note: Brazil is outside the Europe region – with an Austrian Starlink account the 30-day rule applies: Starlink outside Europe – the 30-day rule and travel registration. Power is less reliable in remote places; a power bank with 100 W USB-C PD as a buffer belongs in your bag: Powering the Starlink Mini on the road – power bank, power station, solar.
