In short: With an Austrian account, Europe is your region – there you travel in most countries without a time limit. Outside, since 14 July 2026 (new customers) and 17 August 2026 (existing customers), only „Roam Unlimited“ works – for at most 30 consecutive days and only with travel registration including ID verification. Global Roam has been discontinued. As of October 2026.
What has changed
| Topic | Before | Since summer 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Time limit outside the region | 60 days per trip | at most 30 consecutive days |
| Plans outside the region | several roam plans | only „Roam Unlimited“ |
| Registration | none | travel registration with ID and portrait photo |
| Permanently worldwide | Global Roam | discontinued – Global Priority or transfer |
The key points in detail:
- Time limit: outside the region at most 30 consecutive days (previously 60 days per trip).
- Plan: only „Roam Unlimited“; smaller roam plans now only work in the home region.
- Registration: personal details, ID, portrait photo. It doesn’t lift the time limit.
- Global Roam: discontinued. For permanent use outside, the much pricier Global Priority or transferring the service to another country (with lock-in periods) remain.
What is my „region“?
The home region depends on your account’s country. For Austrian accounts that’s the Europe region. But Europe isn’t all of Europe: according to reports, not every European country belongs to the region – some Balkan states and Poland have been mentioned. Check your destination in the app or on starlink.com before travelling. Whether Starlink is licensed in the country at all is a separate question: Countries with Starlink coverage – and where it’s not allowed.
How travel registration works
- Register the trip outside the region in the Starlink app or your account.
- Enter personal details, upload your ID and take a portrait photo.
- Wait for confirmation – allow a few days before departure.
- Make sure your plan is „Roam Unlimited“; switch in good time if needed (mind billing).
Registration is required for use outside the region but does not extend the 30 days.
What happens after 30 days
According to the Mobile Internet Resource Center there are several options:
| Option | What it means | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| Return to home region | Resets the 30 days | Travellers based in Europe |
| Switch to Local Priority | Reportedly possible up to 60 days in total | Those staying a bit longer |
| Global Priority | No time limit, much more expensive | Long-term voyagers, boats, expeditions |
| Transfer of service | Move the account to another country, with lock-in periods | People relocating |
According to reports it’s unclear whether Standby days count. Plan conservatively.
Planning a long-haul trip
- Plan stays outside Europe under 30 consecutive days – or sort out alternatives.
- Complete travel registration before departure.
- Check your plan: is „Roam Unlimited“ active?
- Check availability and legality at the destination: Countries with Starlink coverage – and where it’s not allowed.
- Plan an eSIM backup: eSIM or Starlink? What pays off when. We usually use Holafly (code JANPEM4IDSKH, 10% off), and AIS in Thailand.
- Back in Europe: adjust the plan or switch to Standby: Pausing Starlink – Standby Mode explained.
Our example: in Brazil (Atins, Lençóis Maranhenses) – outside the Europe region – we got online with the Starlink Mini. Setup: Internet in a dead zone – our setup in Atins (Lençóis Maranhenses).
Practical examples
| Trip | What applies |
|---|---|
| 3 weeks in Brazil | Under 30 days: „Roam Unlimited“ + registration is enough |
| 6 weeks in Thailand in one go | Over 30 days: alternatives needed (Local/Global Priority) or a local SIM/eSIM as main connection |
| Camper summer in Croatia, Italy, France | Within the region – no time limit |
| Caribbean sailing, several months | Global Priority or combined with local SIMs |
Common mistakes
- Registering on departure day – confirmation can take time.
- Keeping a small roam plan – it no longer works outside the region.
- Assuming „Europe = EU“ – some countries reportedly aren’t in the region.
- Not counting days – a simple calendar reminder for day 25 helps.
- No backup – offline after day 30 with no plan.
FAQ
Does the 30-day rule apply in Switzerland or Norway?
What matters is whether the country belongs to your account’s Europe region. Check in the app or on starlink.com.
Does briefly leaving after 30 days help?
According to reports, returning to the home region resets the count. Read the current terms before relying on it.
What happens if I exceed the 30 days?
Starlink’s current terms govern this. According to reports you then have to choose one of the options above to stay online. Don’t count on leniency.
Does this apply to residential plans too?
Residential plans are meant for a fixed location. Roam plans are intended for travel – see Starlink Mini for travel – costs, plans, pausing.
