At a glance (as of October 2026): According to the German order page the Mini costs €199 plus shipping, the roam plans €45 (100 GB) or €95 (unlimited) a month – Austrian prices only appear at checkout with your address. Within the Europe region you travel without a time limit. Outside, since July/August 2026: „Roam Unlimited“ for at most 30 consecutive days, only with travel registration; the 100 GB plan now only works in the home region. Pausing is now called „Standby“ and costs a small monthly fee.
What the Starlink Mini is
The Mini is Starlink’s compact dish with a built-in Wi-Fi router. According to the datasheet it weighs 1.10 kg (1.16 kg with kickstand), needs 12–48 V DC at 60 W rated power and draws 25–40 W on average. It’s rated IP67 (with cables plugged in) and designed for −30 °C to 50 °C. It can also run via USB-C Power Delivery – but only with at least 100 W (20 V/5 A) and the matching USB-C to barrel-plug cable.
Important for travellers: the dish needs a clear view of the sky. Trees, narrow streets or a roof overhead disrupt the connection. The Starlink app shows you obstructions when you set up.
What does the Starlink Mini cost for travel?
Hardware
In September 2026 the German roam order page showed the Mini kit at €199 plus €19 shipping. Starlink notes that hardware prices, activation fees and possible demand surcharges depend on the address. For Austria, Starlink only shows the price at checkout with an Austrian address. The Mini is also sold in retail; devices bought there don’t count for Starlink’s referral programme.
Roam plans
| Plan | Price DE/month | Data | Outside the home region |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roam 100 GB | €45 | 100 GB, then throttled | no longer intended |
| Roam Unlimited | €95 | unlimited, deprioritised under load | up to 30 consecutive days, travel registration required |
| Global Priority (50 GB) | €241 | 50 GB prioritised | no time limit |

Depending on the country Starlink offers further tiers (e.g. 300 GB). If you mainly use the Mini at home, also consider a Residential plan – per starlink.com from €35/month in Austria (as of 25 Oct 2026). Our home page compares all options.
The 30-day rule since summer 2026
The biggest change for long-haul travellers: since 14 July 2026 (new customers) and 17 August 2026 (existing customers) new rules apply to use outside your home country or region:
- Europe is one region. With an Austrian account you can use it in most European countries without a time limit or travel registration. Note: according to reports not all countries are included – some Balkan states and Poland have been mentioned.
- Outside the region (e.g. Brazil, Thailand, Morocco) only „Roam Unlimited“ works – for at most 30 consecutive days. Previously the limit was 60 days per trip.
- Use outside requires travel registration with ID verification (personal details, ID, portrait photo). It doesn’t lift the time limit.
- Global Roam has been discontinued. If you’re permanently outside your home region you must switch to the much pricier Global Priority or transfer the service to another country (with lock-in periods).
What happens after 30 days and which options exist (returning to the home region resets the 30 days, switching to Local Priority up to 60 days in total, Global Priority, transfer) is described in detail by the Mobile Internet Resource Center. According to reports it’s unclear whether days in Standby count towards the 30. Details: Starlink outside Europe – the 30-day rule and travel registration.
Pausing: Standby instead of pause
Roam plans used to be pausable for free. Since August 2025 Starlink has replaced this with Standby Mode: for a small monthly fee a basic connection of about 0.5 Mbps remains – enough for messages and simple websites, not for video calls. US reports cited 5 US dollars a month at launch, later reports around 10 US dollars.
How to do it: in the Starlink app or your account under „Subscription“, switch the plan to Standby; before your next trip, switch back to a full roam plan. Billing is monthly – plan the switch well before departure. Cancelling is still possible, but according to reports not directly in the app; in some markets reactivation fees have been charged. Power on the road
At 25–40 W average the Mini runs on a power bank with 100 W USB-C PD or on a power station. How many hours you’ll realistically get and what to watch for with cables: Powering the Starlink Mini on the road – power bank, power station, solar.
On a boat and at sea
Roam plans are meant for use on land; according to yacht.de coverage extends to about 12 nautical miles offshore. On the open sea you need ocean mode, billed extra by data volume where offered. Starlink is no substitute for emergency communication – an independent backup (e.g. a satellite phone) belongs on board. See Starlink on a boat – coast, ocean mode and backup.
Starlink or eSIM?
Where there is mobile coverage, a travel eSIM is almost always cheaper and more practical: no setup, no power, works on the bus. Starlink shines where mobile coverage is missing or permanently overloaded – remote beaches, mountain huts, camper pitches, boats near the coast. Many travellers combine both. We usually use Holafly (code JANPEM4IDSKH for 10% off) and AIS in Thailand.

FAQ
Can the Mini go on a plane?
The Mini has no built-in battery, so the strict lithium rules for power banks don’t apply to it. Because of weight, shape and fragility many travellers carry it in hand luggage. Still check your airline’s size and weight limits – and the rules for the power bank you bring along.
Does a roam plan also work at home in Austria?
Yes, roam plans work in the home region. If you also use the Mini as internet at a weekend house or at events, you don’t need a second contract.
Do you need an extra router?
No, the router is built into the Mini. For larger areas (camper, house) there’s an optional mini router as an accessory.
How fast is the connection?
Starlink doesn’t guarantee bandwidth. On „Roam Unlimited“ data is deprioritised under load; on the 100 GB plan it’s throttled once the allowance is used. For video calls, besides download speed, what counts most is a stable connection without obstructions in the sky.
Pre-departure checklist
- Activate the device at home and let the software update run
- Check your plan: are you staying in the Europe region? If not: „Roam Unlimited“ and travel registration
- Plan stays outside Europe under 30 consecutive days – or sort out alternatives
- Check that Starlink is available and allowed at the destination (availability map on starlink.com, local rules) – Countries with Starlink coverage – and where it’s not allowed
- Test your power solution (USB-C PD 100 W or 12 V cable)
- Pack cable, kickstand, possibly a mount and a protective case
- Backup: eSIM or local SIM
- After the trip: switch to Standby
About the referral link: new customers get a bonus from Starlink via our link (45 € in Austria; the amount varies by country per Starlink), credited after 2 paid months. It only applies when kit and plan are ordered directly on starlink.com – not via retailers or Amazon. Starlink sets the terms and may change them.
